THE MASON GULCH FIRE We are thankful that Easy Yoke Ranch is as lovely and pristine as ever. You may have heard about the Mason Gulch fire, the largest wildland fire in Colorado in 2005. It burned across 20 square miles of roadless wilderness area near us but was stopped about 200 yards from our property boundary. We were left unscathed and even our great views are intact. The map below shows how far it traveled the day we evacuated (green color). Other pictures (left to right) depict what it looked like from our driveway as we left, the slurry bomber near our houses while we were evacuated, and the view of the smoke from our back deck as we left. We now feel safer and more secure than ever. The area that burned was a rugged area with lots of downed timber and other fuels that now cannot be the source of a fire that would endanger us. And we were amazed and incredibly impressed with the ability of wildland fire fighters to stop this big blaze once it reached places with roads and other means of access. We feel like instant “experts” on wildland fires. For anyone who is interested, we have many pictures and explanations of how they are fought, as well as explanations of how they are a natural part of the mountain west–typically started by lightning and being a normal part of the ecology. |
